Rafael Gen
What is art for you?
For me arts is the activity that I use to recreate an aspect of reality in an estethic vision. I transform myself through the simple but still fascinating metals, in order to fully satisfy my urgent need of being alive.
How are your sculptures born?
I was in a monotonous job between finances and numbers, sacrificing the creativity in my life, I was disconnected, so the desire in me to create and see beautiful things started to develop in time.
Thanks to my passion for arts, alone in my cold studio, I started to create fascinating figures, combining unusual elements. The poetry I find in an old oxidated metal gives me the sense of the past and future;once I put it together in my work it reminds me of the spirituality and the hope of keep living no matter the time.
What is for you to be an artist?
For me, is the search of my own essential balance, is what it makes me aware of an inside and outside space.
I don't need to know more, I just need that the world allows me to create in the same way as I am allowed to breath and walk spontaneously.
Tell us a short story about one of your sculptures:
"Pinceladas de Libertad" 2014 Iron-electrostatic paint
When I become desperate, I remember that in history the path of love and truth always win. There has been murderers and oppressors and for some time they seem invincible, but at the end, they fall, always keep that in mind.
What inspires you?
I am moved by a deep love towards nature, to believe that in the humanity there are no 100% evil persons or 100% perfect; but I must say that what really inspires me is this urgent need of being alive so I can generate deep positive changes in the world.
What do you expect from the observer?
I expect that they are capable of just looking in the same way I do everyday of my life without getting ever tired, "we just need to open our eyes to see the beauty that surrounds us even though it is hiding behind an apparent decay.
Do you have any dreams still to become true? and what are your future projects?
Sometimes I think about dreams, but I actually live every day like if it was the last one! For future projects I could say that the most important one is to work together with poor communities around the globe to make art become a path to improve life, an art school that recicles objects to make them become beautiful art pieces.
If you were a question what question would you be?
Can the world be changed through Arts?
